Do they have Thanksgiving on Tatooine? Every year I get asked the question “do they have Thanksgiving in New Zealand?”. I was born in the UK, I’m both a British and New Zealand citizen thanks to parents from both countries. We moved to New Zealand when I was about six years old. They don’t have Thanksgiving in either country. In fact, I’d say the USA and Canada are about it. It might have something to do with the fact Native Americans are from, well… America!
The same people keep asking me each year. Sometimes I’m patient and I politely pretend they didn’t just embarrass themselves. But, other times I get sarcastic and point out their flawed logic. This is me at my meanest. For the sake of absurdity, in the BMS universe they do have Thanksgiving on Tatooine, although I’m sure many Americans will not even blink. ;=
The observant among you may notice that I’ve categorized this special edition “strip” as “Tales from Beggar’s Canyon”. In the future I will add more flashbacks to Luke’s teenage days on Tatooine. I’ve always wanted to do something in BMS with Deak, Windy, Fixer, and Camie. This would also allow Biggs Darklighter to appear pre-Battle of Yavin.
Tomorrow we will return you to Splinter of the Mind’s Eye. We are now looking at its conclusion in two weeks, with The Empire Strikes Back to follow in the second week of December. We will need everyone’s help spreading the word and helping to generate some enthusiasm and interest so be ready BMSers!
In the meantime, perhaps after you’ve enjoyed your turkey (and for our international fans, whatever you have for dinner) how about sitting back and watching Richard Pryor bartending the Star Wars aliens? It’s classic, but definitely not something to watch while the kids are around due to the language. NSFW or NSFTG either!

Never heard of it, but my Classic Who knowledge is superior to even my Classic Star Wars knowledge. I even have a couple of Classic Who strips in BMS style. 🙂

Speaking of Who. I just started watching about a month and a half ago and watched all of the 9-11 doctors episodes and I want to watch the originals but I get mixed opinions on where to start. Some people said 4th doctor others said 1st or even 7th.,any suggestions ?
If you have a tolerance for slower paced, extremely low budget, black and white television (filmed in only 1 take due to a 48 week filming schedule) and can find the charm, imagination and adventure despite all that, then start at the beginning. I’m a big 70s WHO and 60s WHO fan. However, since you’re just starting with classic I’d recommend instead you watch selected episodes from each Doctor.
For Hartnell (1st Dr) I’d suggest any of the following:
Unearthly Child episode 1 (you can skip 3-4), The Daleks (aka The Dead Planet), The Aztecs, The Rescue
For Troughton (2nd Dr):
Tomb of the Cybermen, Seeds of Death
Pertwee (3rd Dr)
Inferno, Claws of Axos, Curse of Peladon, The Time Warrior
Tom Baker (4th Dr)
Anything from seasons 12-14. Of those I’d highly recommend Ark in Space, Genesis of the Daleks, Pyramids of Mars, Seeds of Doom, Masque of Mandragora, Deadly Assassin, Robots of Death. Other stories from later T. Baker seasons include Horror of Fang Rock, City of Death, State of Decay.
Davison (5th)
Earthshock, The Five Doctors, Resurrection of the Daleks, Caves of Androzani.
C. Baker (6th)
Attack of the Cybermen, The Two Doctors, Revelation of the Daleks.
McCoy (7th)
Remembrance of the Daleks, Curse of Fenric.
So, I’d suggest just trying some of these recommended episodes and jumping from era to era to start. If a particular era scores more immediate points with you then try more from it. But T. Baker’s seasons 12-14 are almost universally admired as a good place to begin. You can work backwards or forwards. A bit like time travel.
Tom Baker was probably the most popular ever. Television shows like ‘Blue Peter’ would show you how to knit a woolly striped scarf just like his.

Tom Baker deserves to be. Particularly in his early run he was able to balance comedy with drama very effectively. After producer Philip Hinchcliffe was forced to leave the series, Baker had a freer hand to focus more on the comedy which took a little away from the gravity of his portrayal. Is it just me or are David Tennant’s and Matt Smith’s performances both very much alike in that they are super excitable and cartoony almost 24/7. Perhaps its the nature of the 45 minute stories these days and the writing cramming too much into too short a time frame? But I also wondered if, in Matt Smith’s case, it had something to do with nerves and not being fully comfortable in the role. If he could only relax a little more and get rid of that lisp…. and wear a mask. 🙂
Tenant was best when he was more cartoonish, I never felt like he could nail the serious doctor down (I like to blame the bad companions he was matched up with). Matt Smith is great in that he is always excited and eccentric (bow-ties are cool). The Doctor spent two of his regenerations being a down in the dumps about the Time Lords, I think this one is a great change of pace and his Tardis and companions reflect that. I do agree that he seems nerves and forcing it a bit some times but from what I have seen from the SJS episode he seems to have really grown into the role .
I take it you are refering to the SJS episode “Death of the Doctor” with the return of Jo Grant. That was a really good story. Sarah and Jo were handled very well and it was surprisingly emotional. Elizabeth Sladen and Katy Manning did an amazing job. They truly are their characters. Matt Smith was okay. I find I don’t despise him which is a good thing. But I think he needs to get more comfortable in the role and slow it down just a tad. I don’t think I’m ever going to like that lisp though. Unfortunately the only episode Leanne and I watched from his season was Victory of the Daleks which was a rushed mess of a story and a disgrace to Winston Churchill. I had no idea Churchill was supposed to be THAT fat! He could out eat Declan Jabba at a hot dog competition any day! The real Winston actually wasn’t morbidly obese at all.
Dear god that was on of the worst things I have ever seen in my life and is definitely the worst Dr.Who episode I have seen. This season was good with the exception of Victory of the Daleks,Time of the Angles, and Flesh and Stone ( I didn’t like the Angles the first time). I would give this season another chance, its a bit different from the others in that it leads up into one thing, kinda like Bad Wolf but we are told about it in the beginning about it and the season docent lead into one immediate ending. I am watching The 11th Hour right now and I don’t hear a lisp.

I would agree with this list – although I would add The Sea Devils in the Jon Pertwee ere, mainly for the Master watching the Clangers, and to see the elaborate deaths of the (acrobatic) sea devils, who were quite obviously pissed.

Doctor Who: Invasion Earth was the miniature game, it was made around 1996 by Harlequin Miniatures, who have long since gone out of buisness. Black Tree Design took over their stuff. They are advertising signed copies on their site.

It seems like a good site to buy them on, but they make their dollar symbols ($) kinda Funny (£) (yes I’m just kidding).
it’s in approximately the same scale as the newer Star Wars miniatures battles game, so I gotta get some and see how Daleks and Imperials face off against each other.
I hope the scale IS right. I hate it when it all sounds good according to the research but ends up being off just a little. Check out this Doctor Who strip Leanne and I made on this very subject!

We already have made a couple. But we don’t have the time to launch anything like that yet. We’d need to build up a few before we announce the website. And it would be CLASSIC Who, not new series.
Got some Micro-universe figures, the Daleks are alright, the werewolf is great, most of the others, particuarly the humans, are worse than some of WoTC’s Star Wars figs.
The scale is close enough, ‘long as you’re not anal about it.

I had wondered why you said strange words and spelled things with inappropriate s’s and unnecessary u’s! It’s so satisfying to finally know the reason.
It should be cool to see some of those good old days, although I remember reading about them in some of the middle-grade kids books and being a little bored. Can’t wait to see how you spice it up!!!
To be fair, I’m pretty sure it’s Americans who spell things with inappropriate zeds and missing u’s. The language came from England after all. :p

I tell you what, it’s hard to catch all the punctuation and grammar when you’re short on time and trying to get the next day’s strip finished. I don’t proof read nearly enough. That said, it’s hard not to slip into an awful hybrid of British / American grammar.
I was once told while correcting someones grammar “Americans don’t speak English we speak American , the language of the free”.
After five years, I finally dropped the u from various words and learned to appreciate the lack of i in aluminum and mischievous. Now I’m back in Canada and have to relearn it all again – LOL
At least if I ever return to the UK, I won’t be lost.

As a Native American, I find it terribly fascinating that people not from the US tend refer to us in the present tense, but US citizens, in my experience, generally use past tense. Modern Americans are largely unaware of present day Native people, while foreigners generally are. It’s sad and funny at the same time. Case in point, Dances With Wolves did better in Europe than the US. Sorry, practically unrelated to today’s post. On topic, the smokin’ Jawa always makes me laugh my ass off.
I sometimes figured other countries had their own version of Thanksgiving, but obviously for other reasons. I must be thinking of other nations’ Independence Days. I guess the closest the UK has to that would be November 5th, maybe?
