Lando is doing his best to be a good host, which means not only will Han and Leia get a comfy room, but Leia, at least, will get a change of clothes soon. Which means I’m going to be calling on Leanne’s remarkable talents very soon for some new art. I’m as excited as any of you. We can also promise some Han & Leia romance which the family-rated film delicately avoided!

Last week Carey sent me the following update on young Star Wars fan Emily’s recovery post brain surgery. I’m sharing the update with everyone as a large number of our readers were good enough to donate a little to help Emily and her family.

One month ago, Emily “underwent Pial synangiosis by Dr. Scott in Boston Children’s hospital on the left side of her head. We initially thought she was going to have it on both sides of her brain because that’s what Dr. Scott had told us back in April. However, after they did an angiogram on the Monday prior to her surgery they discovered that although she does have the disease on the right side of her brain, it was not advanced enough for the procedure to “take”. Dr. Scott told us that she has a 40% chance of the disease progressing on her right side enough for her to have to undergo surgery again. Or it might just stay the same. We will have to wait and see.

“As for the left side of her brain, the surgery went extremely well. Dr. Scott did say that the disease was so advanced on that side he took pictures of it for his research as he had never seen it that advanced! I am truly amazed at Emily’s resolve. You would never know from looking at her that she had something that intense going on in her brain!
As for Emily’s post surgery experience, she recuperated like a trooper. She had some anxiety and some nausea post op, but overall she rallied and was discharged early. (Mostly because she couldn’t sleep in the hospital. Every time we looked up there were at least 10 Doctors around her bed!

“The past few weeks Emily has been recuperating well. She did have one scary incident where her right side went numb. It started off as tingling in her fingers in her right hand and then she couldn’t move her fingers at all. We were about to take her to the ER but called Dr Scott first and her told us to give her and extra baby aspirin at night in addition to the one she gets in the morning and to keep her hydrated. So far this has worked, and she has had no further incidents.

“This past weekend she has done very well. She went to Sail Fest in New London and surprised us all by walking all around downtown with only a few rest stops. On Sunday she announced she wanted to go swimming and since her incision is healing amazingly well we took her to Ocean Beach pool. She is also attending Yoga with Andrew and doing really well. She had an eye appointment last week and the doctor said she doesn’t have to wear glasses! Her right eye isn’t being all lazy like it was before.. WOW!

“We are still in the process of getting her into PT and OT, I should be hearing from the scheaduler this week hopefully, then we can work on her motor skills and helping with her left foot that is still turning outward.

“So that’s about it for now! We continue to be honored and grateful for everyone’s support and thank you so much that we are able to be by Emily’s side during this time.”
