He was bloody useless! My friend – a British Military Historian – who loved SW as a kid said
“You have legions of stormtroops yet you search a suspect space ship with a couple of blokes and a vaccum cleaner? No ‘ring of steel’ round the ship until you’ve had it properly checked out? You know, sometimes I think the Empire was just set up to fail…”
I’m glad that these thoughts never occurred to me when I was a kid!
Maybe… and this is a long shot… Maybe Obi-Wan used the Force to suggest to officers and troopers that “this was not the ship they were looking for”, or something like that. A “Force Hint” just through the mind. Like a feeling of ease. I don’t know why I’m even bothering to suggest anything because I love the OT warts and all. 🙂
you my friend are totally correct there were so many times were a child could have organized it better yet the “all powerful” Empire totally messed it up!
On top of that, their genetically engineered super-soldiers can barely put rounds to targets. To use one of my favorite MST3K quotes: “They set their phasers to ‘miss!'”
Actually, I read a thesis online about stormtrooper inaccuracy. It boiled down to this: Almost every time in the series when the troopers are engaged in a direct firefight with the main cast they have been expressly ordered to let them go.
Every round fired during the escape from the Death Star is a good example, as is the brief exchanges of fire on Bespin. Endor is a special case, given that the Imperial troops were outnumbered some 250-1 according to one count. Even three foot tall teddy bears can be significant if there are 250 of them chasing you around.
I’m not sure I completely buy it, but it gives an interesting perspective.
Well i can believe that they missed on purpose on the Death Star. They had to use the Falcon to find the Rebel Base after all. But what reason did they have not to kill them on Bespin?
Unfortunately, screwups that massive do happen in real life. In the middle of the Battle of France, the General of the only French mechanized forces in a position to stop Rommel, instead of placing his tanks in a position to stop Rommel, he pulled back. The result was a 10+ mile gap that Rommel’s panzer division went through. Indeed, that type of messup was normal in the Battle of France: the Germans couldn’t have won it without the French making every mistake in the book. Another French error late in the campaign was to set up a series of fortifications, widely spaced from each other. The Panzers just went between them and cut off their supplies, while the following infantry moved up to take the forts out.
Actually, the Empire was INTENDED to be a failure without Palpatine running things directly. That’s why it started falling apart so fast after the movies showed Vader killing him.
Well, when presented the way it is here, it really *is* pretty unbelievable and doesn’t sound like much of a threat. With one million people on board the DS and a rag-tag bunch of people running about the place, and with the Empire’s unfortunate tendency toward hubris, it’s plausible, if not entirely practical to be so lax.
Ah, but if fiction has taught us anything, it’s “beware the rag-tag band of implausible heroes.” They always win, you know. 😉

Yeah but if the death Star is 126 km across and only has a crew of a million thats only about 10 per cubic km, even if they are all near the surface that still only rises to about 50 per square km. 🙂 Hmmm… I suppose they’d all be gathered in bunches but let a prisoner get away in there and you’d never find them.
If I was going to pick holes I might point out that I did a few calculations and noticed that the Death Star isn’t actually big enough to destroy a planet, its like a mouse taking out an elephant, or …. maybe a nuclear bomb the size of the Death Star could really dent one though. ])

Darth Vader knew Obi-wan was on board and had already hatched the plan to let them take the princess.
Of course, it would have relied on luck a lot less if the tracking device was implanted into the princess instead of stowed on board. Maybe it was. Maybe she’s not all-natural anymore!
