Though you have to wonder why he never saved the day by flying in the OT.
The canon explanation is that his rockets got damaged, and he couldn’t get them replaced because the company that made them went out of business. Really.

I’m one of those weird fans who don’t even consider the prequels canon.
Well, whether you like it or no, they are canon, cause it’s Lucas who says what’s canon and what’s not. It’s his world.
Do me a favor and read the whole run of webcomics that we’ve done. You don’t need to defend Lucas. We’re not his enemy. There’s a very good argument that if something doesn’t fit or tries to retcon its own past then it is making itself a separate canon. Just think about that for a while.
