New to Blue Milk Special? Start reading from the beginning!

New York Comic Con – Show Report!

Leanne and I had a great time in New York at THE Comic Con. Blair Butler of G4 and Michael Bell of voice acting fame dropped by our table along with many of our current readers and hopefully many new new readers too! Michael Bell, who has performed on the stage with Mark Hamil, even offered to show our webcomic to the Original Trilogy star!

We gave bags of BMS goodies to both the Rebel Legion’s Echo Base and the 501st Legion’s Empire City Garrison. Joel from the Rebel Legion gave Leanne and myself a 10th Anniversary Rebel Legion pin which we were honored to receive! We might even have been invited to a German Star Wars convention! We were regrettably unable to attend a karaoke evening with our fellow Star Wars fans, but we hope we can get to hang out in the future!

Weirdest convention moment? A 5 1/2 year old who was barely taller than our table peered over and looked at our free promo cards and asked if we “had the rights”. A flipping 5 year old! I responded to him as I would anyone else and explaind that we were a non-profit fan webcomic and that Blue Milk Special was protected under United States Fair Use laws as parody. However, he walked off about mid-way through my response. Kid’s these days remind me of Children of the Damned.

We debuted a revised Blue Milk Special milk carton which will be made available on the site tomorrow, once I can reduce the file size of the PDF. We also debuted many new BMS pinups and 7 volumes that collected all of our strips to date in print form for fans to flip through and read at our table. To be honest, I think I did a lot more work than was necessary for this show, but hopefully it will make preparation for future convention appearances a bit easier. We could definitely use a hand with set up and take down before and after the shows in the future. It was also very quiet on the Star Wars costuming front, although we did see a few cool costumes from the Rebel Legion, including a remote control full-size Artoo Detoo that blew everyone’s mind.

Now onto the cool stuff. Here are some of the BMS sketches drawn by Leanne during the show. Click on them for larger versions.

I almost forgot… today’s strip features the return of Bea Arthur, this time cast in the role of Halla, the Force sensitive Obi-Wan stand-in for Splinter of the Mind’s Eye. Bea, of course, played Ackmena the bartender in the much maligned Holiday Special which we so recently ripped the piss out of… lovingly of course.
