Launch the Probe Droids!
The opening scene from The Empire Strikes Back pans down from the disappearing text scroll to find a Star Destroyer slowly plying its way through space and seeding a solar system with Probe Droid pods. I can hear the haunting orchestral piece in my head as I type this. Composed by the genius that is John Williams, the man knew how to capture the mood and magic of a scene and was probably instrumental (pun intended) in opening my ears to orchestral music. We will be back on either Friday this week or Monday next week (depending on whether we hear enough chanting to warrant an encore) with the first Hoth strip. 🙂
Today’s strip, as some of you may have guessed, is inspired by Eddie Izzard’s stand up about Vader’s misadventures in the Death Star Canteen. Hey, that gives me an idea… oh wait… The Death Star’s already gone supernova. Hmmm… Super Star Destroyer Canteen perhaps? Or should we just hold off until RoTJ and the Death Star II? Anyway, here’s the YouTube clip of Izzard’s stand up, brought to life in Lego animation. Possible NSFW language. I can’t remember, but I do know Izzard does not censor himself.
T. Gatto has been busy making more work for me. Thankfully all the extra work getting his excellent milk cartons on the site is totally worth it! T. even managed to create a paper sombrero for Breedo! Clearly there is nothing that can not be made out of paper if you’ve got the Masters Degree under your cap. I have finally caught up with all the cartons T. has sent me. They’ve been reorganized into the categories of Rebel, Imperial, Fringe and Other, just check the Downloads page to find them. Danke! It’s been a while since we directly parodied a Star Wars movie. When it came to the Holiday Special and Splinter we were covering obscure material. In the case of A New Hope and now Empire, everyone has seen the films multiple times and there’s this anticipation of certain scenes and the question of how we will twist them. I’m looking forward to this too. There are so many strips that are classics but have to wait until we reach the scenes chronologically. 🙂

I thought about you when I was uploading the Bith carton. I’ll work on an idea for an incentive strip. Been a while now since we put up a new one.
No problem, except I feel like I’m making them faster than I can photograph them.
I think I need a yellow sheet so I can set them up like a Vintage Kenner Card back, and take a group shot. 😉
BTW, has anyone sent away for the new missile firing Boba Fett figure, I can’t wait to get mine (only 30 years or so overdue) 🙂

Regarding the probes;
1. The Rebels do not fly a flag or have a sign up that says “Yes we are the Rebels” so, with 1,000,000+ worlds in the empire, and presumably uncountable smaller settlements, how exactly did the Empire figure out, from 1 droid destroyed, that Hoth was where a massive fleet of Star Destroyers needed to assemble? Why not just go around destroying probe droids, and setting up dummy shield generators, and letting the fleet run itself ragged?
It just seems like a lot of assumptions were made in locating the Rebel base. But I guess that’s all the Empire had to go on, so might as well check it out.
Maybe there was a McLucas nearby?
It’s all about Forciness. Vader “felt it”. 😉 Good idea about setting up dummy bases. As far as I can gather in the film it appears the rebels haven’t been on Hoth long, so it sounds like a big waste of time.
I knew Forciness had something to do with it. I just knew it!
After all you can sense a fly in deep space from a light year away, but try to deduce that the Chancelor is an evil Sith, or that one of the upstart jedis on the counsel is going dark, and you can forget it.
Forciness is not only a useful tool for the aspiring Jedi/Sith, it can also get writers out of a practically infinate number of Jams, and pave over plot holes with the stroke of a pen. Forciness Rules!

Interesting. Does the ‘Force’ travel at light speed? Or is it just sort of everywhere at once with an instantaneous internal communication… Opens up all sorts of interesting questions.
