Hoth Patrol
Precognition? Hallucination? Or just plain weird? Today’s strip was inspired by the image floating around the internet with the same punchline as its caption. I was in two minds about it, but Leanne loved the strip so much that you have her to thank.
Don’t forget that Grand Moff Tarkin makes an appearance in tonight’s episode of Clone Wars, as his younger self, Captain Tarkin. Here’s hoping for something special. 🙂
On other fronts, T. Gatto, someone who regular readers must be familiar with by now, has sent along some amazing photos of his papercrafted Speeder, complete with 1/2 sized milk carton Star Wars characters. The photos speak for themselves… so brace yourselves!

When I read the taun-taun’s first words, I subconsciously put an ‘eh?’ at the end – s/he is totally Canadian.

Hey Tom – that speeder is fabulous! When I was a kid I sellotaped a carboard abomination together of my own making and coloured it with poster paint. Terrible – but I loved it (the toys were unaffordable). No if only I’d had access to your creations! I reckon I’ll print this and build it with young Johnny.
I also built an X-Wing (matchsticks for guns) and a TIE fighter. Wonder what ever became of them? Sad really.
One of the reasons I make the models is so that my kids can play with them. With the current price of Star Wars toys, I can’t afford too many of them. They want into my vintage Kenner toys badly, but I cant let them (look dad I opened your 21back Boba Fett), so the card models work out OK.

Ha ha. I know – feel torn sometimes. Johnny plays with the ’78 figures but I have the backs and weapons safely boxed away.
I built lots of ships and buildings out of cardboard, but I never bothered painting them. Probably because the big brown tape would’ve required some kind of special paint, and that’d make it more expensive than I cared for. And I mostly built simple stuff I designed myself. It wasn’t until later that I managed to even closely mimic the actual Star wars ships. Or the AT-AT. (The early one was huge, made out of an old diaper box, with toilet rolls for legs. The second one was about the size of the plastic toy, and looked a lot more accurate, and could stand without falling down at the drop of a hat.)
Now I’m too old for paper crafting, but these cartons still look awesome! 😀

Well, it’s too late now. At least 25 years too late… Though I recently received the wampa, taun-taun and bantha I made out of papier-mâché. I even covered the bantha with pieces of fur, and made horns out of some kind of white clay that I had to boil to harden. Kind of brittle stuff though, as one of the horns got broken off.
It sounds like the “clay” you used was Sculpy. If you boil / bake it for too long it will be too brittle and break… of course, it won’t last forever, so I’m not sure if it was age or the way you baked or boiled it. Why do I know so much? I customized Doctor Who figures in my spare time. 🙂 What spare time?

Ho Ho! Good one – i had to think for a moment.
With regards to building the speeder;
– It is a pain, and requires patience and some custom fitting (Like most garage kits).
– I recommend using some double sided tape for the bigger parts, and pre-fitting everything before final assembly.
– Also I hate the window, but a clear plastic coffee dome (from Starbucks or any coffee shop) will make a great window if cut down properly.
-Hope you enjoy it, and please don’t put a hex on me halfway through assembly.

Why do they send the most important person to scout?
Both he and Solo volunteered. Of course, the moment Luke volunteers, he gets attacked by a Wampa and nearly dies. You think having the bonus of being Force sensitive it would have helped him out there on patrol.
However, perhaps a number of scouts had not returned from their patrols (not really implied onscreen) and Luke and Han were stepping in as the big boys who would sort it all out? I can tell you one thing. George Lucas is a god and has this all worked out.

I’m sure they volunteered. Good leaders don’t put their men in unnecessary danger. I don’t know why they didn’t wait a day for the speeders to be ready before they went out, though. Would it really have made that much difference?

You know, if it sticks to the movie, that tauntaun doesn’t get its wish. It just becomes wampa chow. It was Solo’s tauntaun that got the honour of being the first tauntaun sleeping bag.

Hey, Rod, I just finished watching “The Citadel”, and I thought they made a great Job at re-creating the Cushing facials. Altough, the voice sounded a little to bright if you ask me. this is in the midst of the CW, so tarkin’s suposed to be about 18 years younger, not 30. ALso, wasn’t the nexus the place where they constructed the DS, which Tarkin himself supervised? What did you think about the carbon-freezing part? I chuckled the moment Cpt. Rex (the blue-coloured 501st captain in a skirt) said “Carbon freezing?”. You know, with every new CW episode about Ani, you start to feel that Darth is showing to be more and more nostalgic than we ever knew x3
