Star Wars Episode VII will hit theaters in 2015. When we finally get to the day of release, for those of us who will not be able to attend the first night screening, it could get really ugly trying to avoid spoilers over the first couple of days…

Spoilers are coming - Star Wars Episode VIILast Monday, June 3rd, 2013, people were getting upset online and at work about unavoidable spoilers for Sunday night’s episode of Game of Thrones. Don’t worry, no spoilers here! I don’t watch Game of Thrones and have no intention of reading the books. I’m not big on “grown up” fiction. Leanne however, enjoys the show. She has such a busy schedule that she was one episode behind, but we’d had a hectic weekend and she graciously decided to spend Sunday evening with me instead of the television. She consciously avoided the usual places where she might encounter spoilers online, but how was she to know that the athlete Terrell Suggs, who she follows on Twitter, would be so gobsmacked by the episode’s ending, that he would tweet major spoilers right after it aired.

When Star Wars Episode VII rolls around, I know that with my health, I’m not going to have the stamina for an epic line party. I’m not even sure if I will be able to see the movie during its first couple of days after release. The Game of Thrones spoiler debacle has reminded me that social media makes it hard to dodge massive spoilers. So, short of literally putting down our phones and turning away from our computers– hell, turning away from all human contact– we will more than likely go into the theater and find few surprises remain.

Perhaps, as more information comes to light about the nature of the production, casting, photos, etc, I might not be so worried about spoilers. Hey, I don’t give just anything with a Star Wars logo on it a free pass, ya know! After all, what if the film starts looking like style over substance, or the return of Jar Jar-like characters? That’s one spoiler I’d be grateful for in advance. However, at this stage, I have few reasons to be anything but hopeful. Heck, the title for Episode VII should have been “A New Hope”.

Since I don’t plan on becoming a hermit, like crazy old Ben out across the Dune Sea, avoiding major spoilers is going to come down to one thing… “Luck,” as Han Solo would call it. Our BMS Vader would, of course, prefer to call it “Forciness”, but that’s not important right now. 😉

I think the following clip from the Simpsons is appropriate…
