One Last Round

Bea Arthur has a memorable scene in the Holiday Special as one of its headlining guest stars. Of course, it should be said that most of the Holiday Special is memorable, even 3-4 minutes of Lumpy running around growling. There are good memories and there are bad memories. Bea plays the role of the Mos Eisley Cantina’s nightshift manageress, Ackmena. For some reason I blur the name Ackmena with Alcmena, mother of Heracles from the Greek myths. This gives absolutely no insight into Bea Arthur’s character, however.

The story surrounding this “Life on Tatooine” segment of the special is that Ackmena is busy trying to divert and deflect the attentions of a socially awkward volcano-headed loser (understandable perhaps given his disfigurement) while attempting to kick her patrons out to comply with an Imperial Curfew. Before we get to that, however, we couldn’t resist the most obvious gag of them all when it comes to Bea Arthur… The Golden Girls. We hope you like Leanne’s BMS versions as much as we do.

Sorry for the delay with the strip. We will wrap the Holiday Special up by the weekend of Star Wars Celebration V. Thanks in advance to Paul and Joshua from SWAC for their help assembling volunteers to handout our mass of exclusive promotional postcards at the upcoming event.

The BMS style Golden Girls are adorable (also, GG references just win)!

Glad to see you posting again. I was just noticing yesterday that it’s been a while and I missed your sillyfication of Star Wars.

Her posture in panel 3 is perfect. :)

I don’t understand how the empire could shut her down when the planet is controlled by the hut ?

Short answer… the Star Wars lore we have today wasn’t around back then. Long answer, I’d say Jabba would still ultimately be something of a puppet for the Empire, regardless of his criminal network in that section of the galactic rim. Plus, I never got the impression in the original movie that Jabba’s influence was very overt. The moisture farmers don’t seem very preoccupied with him and the kids are more interested in rebellion against the Empire, not the Hutt.

Yeah, you’ve definitely got a point. I also never, even through all the lore, EVER got the impression Jabba controlled it all.

          I’m just being picky.

            Good points though, definitely!

AND….Leanne put my favorite Cantina bar character in – Hammerhead! It’s a combination of his looks and the speech. How did they make those sounds, anyway? Anybody know? I’ve always been fascinated by it.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ithorian – 2 mouths and four throats? They could create sonic booms with that!

      • Karen

Well, okay, that’s how the Ithorians make sound, but how did the special FX crew come up with the speech?

And apologies to any Ithorians reading this thread. I hadn’t meant to use an inter-galatic racial slur. I beg your pardon.

I believe Ben Burtt did the sound effects.

Congratulations you accomplished something never before done in the the history of modern media.
    - You made Bea Arthur look cool ;)

BTW since you do not appairently draw noses on your charactures (not a criticism, as I like your art style a lot) how would you draw Cyrano De Bergerac? I mean the poor guy already has a complex about having a big nose, but if he was suddenly the ONLY one with a nose at all, he would probably just go off himself or something equally drastic. Just an observation.

    Keep it up!!!

Agh! Another piece of video hell. Tell me, is that the excellent comedy actor from Mel Brooks’ films? (Headly Lamaar etc.)
